Indonesian killed in ceiling collapse

GEORGE TOWN - An Indonesian worker died on the spot while his colleague sustained serious injuries in an accident at a construction site in Bayan Lepas.

The deceased, known only as Maksum, 25, was working on a structure said to be a guardhouse when the ceiling fell on him and crushed him to death in the 11.45am incident. Both victims are from Sumatera.

A worker, known only as Amat, said he heard a loud crash and was shocked to see Maksum sandwiched between the ceiling and the ground.

He said five workers were working on the guardhouse of a double-storey terrace house in the area.

“There was a lot of blood oozing out of the rubble,” he said.

The injured worker, Dany Setiawan, 37, was sent to Penang Hospital.

It is learnt that he suffered a fractured leg and broken ribs.
